Millerite

Millerite is a mineral form of nickel, composed of nickel sulfide (NiS). The whisker-like millerite crystals are on a background of hematite. This sample is on display at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The image is close to actual size.

This sample of millerite is about 4x4 cm and is from Hall's Gap, Kentucky. It shows the characteristic crystal whiskers.

This large sample of millerite resembles a mound of moss. It is about 13x20 cm and is from Neunkirchen, Nord Rhein-Westphalen, Germany. Closer examination reveals the crystal whiskers.
