Salts

The compounds formed in acid-base reactions by the combination of the anion of the acid and the cation of the base are called salts. The reaction

HCl + NaOH -> H2O + NaCl

produces sodium chloride, NaCl, which is common table salt. Salt is however a general term which applies to the products of all such acid-base reactions.
