GermaniumGermanium is a grayish-white metalloid which is brittle and crystalline. Electrically it behaves as a semiconductor. Its chemistry is similar to that of silicon, and it has applications as an alternative to silicon as a basis for solid state electronic devices. Germanium oxide is used in the manufacture of optical glass and as a drug in the treatment of pernicious anemia. One germanium-containing mineral is the sulfide germanite which also contains iron and copper.
