Taafeite

This sample of taafeite is displayed in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Taafeite is an oxide mineral of beryllium, magnesium and aluminum. It has the composition Mg₃BeAl₈O₁₆. This sample is about 1.5 cm and the gem is 5.3 carats. They are from Sri Lanka.
