(Sc,Y)₂Si₂O₇

This sample of thortveitite is displayed in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Thortveitite is a silicate mineral of yttrium and scandium. It has the composition (Sc,Y)₂Si₂O₇. This sample is about 5x18 cm and is from Madagascar. Named after Olaus Thortveit (1872-1917), feldspar and mineral exporter from Iveland, Norway.
