Silver

Silver is sometimes found in metallic form. These samples are on display in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. The sample at left is about 5x9 cm and is from Batopilas, Chihuahua, Mexico. The sample at right is about 5x25cm and is from the same location. They are described as silver with calcite.

The sample at left is about 6x40 cm and is from Batopilas, Chihuahua, Mexico. The sample below is about 6x4 cm and is from Kongsberg, Buskerud, Norway. The sample at right is about 8x15 cm and is from Dreikonigsstein, Lahr, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. It is described as silver with chalcopyrite and calcite.

This is a composite showing some of the variety of metallic silver samples. They are all at approximately the same scale, with the largest sample being probably 20x30 cm. Starting at the top and proceeding clockwise, the descriptions are (1) and (2) silver with calcite from Kongsberg, Buskerud, Norway. (3) silver after chlorargyrite from Globe, Arizona. (4) silver from Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan. (5) Silver with copper from Pnoenix mine, Eagle River, Michigan. (6) silver with copper from Wolverine mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan. (7) silver from Kongsberg, Buskerud, Norway.
