Continuous Wave NMROne of the earliest and simplest applications of nuclear magnetic resonance is the continuous wave or CW NMR. In this kind of application, both the magnetic field and the RF excitation signal are continuously on. Either the magnetic field is kept constant and the frequency of the RF excitation is varied, or the magnetic field is varied while keeping the RF input frequency constant. Either approach allows you to sweep through the resonance of the sample under investigation. This sketch of an NMR instrument shows an arrangement where the signal detection coil around the sample is oriented perpendicular to the RF excitation coil.
