The Big Bang: Inevitable by Law or Finely-Tuned Creation?

Stephen Hawking says in his latest book that God is not necessary for the creation of the universe. It is a good time to review the point of view that the existence of laws implies a lawmaker. Laws are not the expected products of a random, purposeless universe. The effects of physical laws depend upon initial conditions and upon constraining constants which are not themselves part of the laws but could take many values. Our universe has incredibly precise values for these constants, and infinitesmal changes in any of them sabotages the development of a habitable universe. Often described as the anthropic principle or "anthropic coincidences", the evidence for fine-tuning makes faith in a Creator the inference to the best explanation for the universe.
